harry
Harry, our dashing Labrador mix, has returned to the fold after his latest adventure in a new home didn’t quite stick. He’s a charming senior with the soulful eyes of a well-loved teddy bear and the playful heart of a pup half his age. Perfect for anyone in search of a mature four-legged friend who’s still young at heart and ready to roll with life’s punches.
Harry’s journey to us has been quite the odyssey. Rescued from a public shelter in Macedonia, he quickly became a cherished member of our overseas kennels, patiently awaiting adoption. His prospects looked bright when a family applied to adopt him, and we were thrilled at the thought of him settling into a loving retirement. He boarded our transport bus, bound for the UK, but upon arrival, his expected home had vanished. Attempts to reach them failed, and it appeared they had a last-minute change of heart, leaving dear Harry without a place to call home.
This is why we always offer rescue back up by way of our Nottinghamshire kennels. Harry came to stay with us where he quickly charmed his way through our staff and volunteers. Showing off his cuddly personality and eagerly giving love and kisses to anyone who comes to spend time with him.
Harry is quite large and carries a bit of weight, so we advise against him being a lap dog. Fortunately, he’s content to lie on his camp bed or the rug in our office. He’s even happier when someone has the time to stroke or brush him. Harry thoroughly enjoys being pampered with a brush and will shoot a fierce glare if his relaxation is disturbed — a moment we’ve even captured on camera.
He walks well on the lead and loves to be out and about for a sniff, he is neutral towards other dogs while out but we would not rehome him with other dogs as he much prefers being the sole dog in the home, the king of his castle. An enclosed garden would be great so that he can have a bit of sunbathing time in the summer, he loves being out in our field especially if he can sniff out some peacock droppings to roll in.
Harry’s passion is food. Upon arrival, he was quite plump, but switching to a nutritious raw food diet has enabled him to lose some weight. Now, he can indulge in delicious snacks without the concern of his belly touching the ground. He will lay claim to any food he finds, even if it’s not for him. So we would advise that he be fed separately from the family and any counter food be kept out of reach.
Harry is fine around children but we imagine he would prefer a home where any kids are over 15 so that he can enjoy some peace and quiet.
He settles beautifully in the evenings, he loves a buffalo horn to chew on before bed. When he first arrived to us from Macedonia he promptly conked out in his kennel and slept for the rest of the day, we’re sure his kennel neighbours were just thankful that he doesn’t snore.
As mentioned earlier, the last home was not a good fit. We recommend that new owners provide a decompression period for new dogs, allowing them time to adjust to their new environment without the pressure of playing and interacting with people they are not yet familiar with. However, just two hours later, we were informed that he was not settling in and would be returned.
