Meet Basil

Basil has spent his first year growing up in rescue. Now he's ready for someone to show him what comes next.

Basil came into rescue just before Christmas with his mum, Evelyn, and seven tiny siblings.

Evelyn had been abandoned and later gave birth on the streets, she was found sheltering beneath some building stairs, trying to keep eight newborn puppies safe and warm through the freezing weather.

Thankfully, the whole family was brought into the safety of the rescue, where Evelyn could raise her puppies without having to worry about finding food, shelter or warmth.

One year later, those tiny puppies have grown up, and Basil is still waiting for his family.

Basil is now around 1 year old. We know his mum Evelyn is a Labrador mix, but we have no information about his father, so we can't know exactly what breeds make up Basil. He's expected to be a large dog when fully grown, and his future family should be comfortable with both his size and the needs of a young dog who's still learning about the world.

Personality

Basil can be a little shy when he first meets someone new, he likes a little time to work things out, but once he begins to feel comfortable, he warms to human affection, and treats are a particularly effective way of convincing Basil that a new friendship might be worth exploring!

He's already showing a lovely willingness to learn and engages well with the training the rescue team are able to give him. His lead walking is improving steadily, and with more individual attention from his own family, he'll have the opportunity to build on everything he's started learning.

Basil may be a year old, but he's spent that year growing up in a rescue environment rather than a family home, so while he's no longer a tiny puppy, there are still plenty of puppy lessons ahead. His adopters should be prepared to work on things such as toilet training, lead walking, household routines and helping him become comfortable with all the unfamiliar sights, sounds and experiences that come with living in a home.

Basil doesn't need someone who expects him to know everything already, he needs someone who'll enjoy helping him learn.

Basil gets along well with other dogs at the rescue, including dogs outside his sibling group. He could happily share his home with a compatible resident dog, but this isn't essential. Basil could also live as the only dog in his family.

He has not yet been tested with cats, but this can be arranged at the kennels for a suitable applicant if required.

Basil also regularly interacts with the rescuers' children and has been great with them.

Because he's a young, excitable dog who is expected to be large, we're recommending children aged 6+.

Basil's perfect home

Basil needs patient, committed people who understand that confidence and life skills are things he'll continue developing after adoption. His world so far has largely consisted of his mum, siblings, other rescue dogs, the people caring for him and the kennels he knows.

There's an enormous amount beyond that still waiting for him, his first proper home routine. New places to explore, new things to learn, his own bed his own people.

He may need a little encouragement while he works it all out. But give Basil the time and guidance to find his feet, and you'll have the privilege of watching his whole world get bigger.
