Meet Rupert

Rupert might take a moment to decide whether you're trustworthy. Luckily, arriving with treats significantly improves your chances. 😄

Rupert is a handsome young Labrador mix who came into rescue just before Christmas with his mum, Evelyn, and seven tiny siblings. Evelyn had been abandoned and later gave birth on the streets, she was found sheltering beneath some building stairs, doing her best to keep eight newborn puppies safe and warm in freezing weather.

The whole family was brought into the safety of the rescue, where Evelyn could raise her puppies without having to worry about finding food, shelter or warmth. Those tiny puppies aren't so tiny anymore and, Rupert is now ready to start the next stage of his life.

We know Rupert's mum Evelyn is a Labrador mix, but we have no information about his father, so we can't know exactly what breeds make up this handsome boy. He's expected to grow into a large dog, so his future family should be comfortable with having a substantial four-legged member of the household.

Personality

Rupert can initially be a little shy with unfamiliar people, but it doesn't take him long to begin enjoying affection once he feels comfortable, and treats certainly help!

He's a bright young dog who is already showing us that he enjoys learning and engages really well with training. The rescue team are currently working on his lead walking and he's making steady progress.

With eight puppies from this litter alone to care for, the team can't give Rupert the same individual training he'd receive in a home, but what he's shown so far suggests there's a very willing student waiting for someone to teach him.

Rupert is a young dog who has grown up in a rescue environment, rather than a family home, that means his adopters need to be prepared to continue his education from the beginning. He may need help with toilet training, lead walking, household routines and all the everyday experiences that come with living in a home. He's not arriving as the finished article, but for someone who enjoys training and wants the experience of helping a young dog learn, that's part of what could make adopting Rupert so rewarding.

Rupert gets along well with other dogs at the rescue, including dogs outside his sibling group. He could therefore happily share his home with a compatible resident dog, although this isn't a requirement, Rupert could also be the only dog in his family.

He has not yet been tested with cats, but this can be arranged at the kennels for a suitable applicant if required.

Rupert also regularly spends time around the rescuers' children and has interacted well with them, because he's a young, excitable dog who is expected to be large, we're recommending children aged 6+.

Rupert's perfect home

Rupert needs people who understand that bringing home a young rescue dog means being prepared to teach him about a world he hasn't experienced yet. He needs patience, consistency, positive training and people who won't worry if everything doesn't fall into place immediately. In return, they'll get a bright young dog who's already showing that he wants to learn, and they'll get to be there for all those firsts that Rupert hasn't had yet.

His first home, his first family routine, his first favourite spot to sleep, and the moment this initially shy boy realises that the people around him aren't going anywhere.

Rupert has already started learning. Now he just needs someone who'll enjoy teaching him the rest. 💙
